Kathryn Miller inherited her mother's love for flowers, but never thought of arranging them as a career.
She wanted to be an actor. While living in New York, however, she turned to the floral business and hasn't looked back - except for a short stint with the Esther's Follies comedy troupe when it first opened in Austin.
In nearly 30 years as a florist, Miller has designed arrangements for theater opening nights, movie sets and special occasions. Her work has distinct look. She upends a few flowers to add beauty to the vase or creates sculptures with stalks and leaves bent in fanciful directions. "I hear that over and over: 'Oh, I saw that arrangement - it must be Cowgirls and Flowers,'" she says.

Although each design is custom-made, Miller enjoys more compact arrangements like the one shown. "The recipients, if they are receiving them at work, can put them on their desk ans see the flowers instead of the stems," she says. The berries and fruit she incorporates into her designs are not seen by everyone. They also provide a purpose, she jokes: "I think I'm going to eat the berries tomorrow."
